Ongoing Costs for a Self-Published Author

Ongoing Costs for a Self-Published Author

There are pros and cons to self-publishing a book versus going the traditional route. I won’t be going into that in this post but thought I would share the basics when it comes to costs… and why I need all the coffee all the time 😉

At its most basic, I suppose you can write for (almost) free. So long as you have a pen and paper, you can technically write a book. However, just like a car needs servicing by a qualified mechanic, it helps if you can pay professionals to assist you on your self-publishing journey.

Every year, I pay for my Microsoft Office suite, website domains, website hosting, Facebook and Amazon ads, newsletter subscription services, accountancy fees, professional editing, customised affiliate links with reporting, formatting, book cover design, paperback printing, postage, packaging, market stalls and liability insurance. That’s all I can think of right now, but I know there’s more.

There are plenty of other services available that you may need to pay for if you’re not tech-savvy such as website maintenance, advertising graphics, programs to grow your newsletter and software to help with your self-editing. I spend thousands of dollars up-front to produce a book and I simply have to hope that it covers costs one day.

Any help you can offer me in the way of “coffee” is greatly appreciated! If you have any questions about my experience in self-publishing, I’m always happy to have a chat.

Fly fierce, strike strong.
